Honoring Businessman Bob Shell

Thank you for honoring Robert Shell, Jr. in the Winter/Spring 2006 issue of the Huntington Quarterly. He is a great man who deserves public recognition for his many private acts of kindness. Although the article was well written, words cannot fully express the extent of his generosity towards his friends, family and community. I have personal knowledge of Mr. Shell’s compassion, because, as mentioned in the article, I am the young lady from McDowell County who he helped support throughout college. Mr. Shell not only helped me financially, but he also extended himself personally by mentoring me. His guidance and support were essential tools in facilitating my personal success. Mr. Shell expanded my view of the world beyond the small coal town where I grew up. He took an individual interest in my professional and personal development by ensuring that I had the appropriate skills to accomplish my goal of becoming a lawyer. Most importantly, Mr. Shell gave me confidence and made me feel capable of great things. He encouraged me when I thought my situation was impossible. Mr. Shell never stopped believing in me even when I did not believe in myself. In return for his assistance, he only asks that I help others as he has helped me. Thanks to Mr. Shell’s financial and emotional support, I am now a lawyer and starting a promising career that gives me the resources to help others. I am forever grateful for his support and humbled by his generosity. Although Mr. Shell is a modest man, I am pleased to know that he received the recognition that he deserves.

The Great Pumpkin House

Thank you so very much for doing the article on “The Great Pumpkin House.” It was wonderful! My granddaughter, who was three at the time, got to experience it for the first time while she was visiting us from Cincinnati last year and was in such awe that she has talked about the “pumpkin patch” ever since. Her mother is making a special trip to bring her in to see it again this year and with your article she can see it long after going home. It’s truly atreat to have something like this in our area and have a wonderful magazine to do it justice.

Thank you so much for the article on Bob Shell. As soon as I received my Huntington Quarterly, I could hardly wait to turn to the article and check it for family pictures. I was Heather’s First Grade teacher at Central City Elementary at the time of the adoption of Heather and Danielle by the Shells. After the adoption of the girls they were transferred to their own school district and I have often wondered about them and how they are doing. It was so good to see their picture in the HQ and to see how they have matured into attractive young ladies.

I just read your article about Bob Shell. I have never met him but you have portrayed him as just the kind of man I would like to meet. Good Job! Very well written and very nice layout.
